Carl Flesch is the author of a number of books. He is the son of the famous violinist and teacher of the same name. Carl Franz Flesch, or Carl F Flesch, as he prefers to be known, came to England in 1934 as a refugee, where he married and has lived ever since. An astute observer of English manners and customs with a perception that is unique to the outsider, he writes with humour and insight on a wide range of topics in his collected essays, Who's Not Who. In Where Do You Come From? his book on the culture of German-Jewish refugees in Britain, he depicts a distinctive cultural tradition. As a child and young man, he was privy to the world of classical music, through his access to composers, performers and artists generally who frequented the home of his illustrious father. These recollections are the subject of And Do You Also Play the Violin?, a fascinating account and exceptional resource for anyone interested in 20th-century classical music.
